Vienna Highlights

This is just a small sample of things to do in Vienna. We only had a couple of full days to explore, but these were the highlights!

EAT

Melangerie - We had a delicious brunch in this cute cafe with very friendly service and both indoor and outdoor seating. Affordable and delivious!
Cafe Central - A Vienna institution, their pastry case is the stuff of dreams and the ornate interior is a time machine.
Restaurant Neubauschneke - If you’re looking for VERY authentic Viennese food, look no further than Neubauscheneke - goulash, schnitzel, and apple strudel, sample it all here. Affordable, too!
Haas and Haas - This adorable tea house has ample outdoor seating and a fantastic tea offering with scones, finger sandwiches and pastries. Just across the way form St. Stephen’s, stop by and be fancy for an afternoon.
ERICH - There is a great taco offering for lunch, but we went early to enjoy their breakfast. Cool art, outdoor seating, and tasty cocktails set the vibe.

DRINK

1516 - This bustling brewpub is very tourist friendly, with a variety of beers brewed in-house and a classic bar food menu. Close to all the sights, its a good spot to rest your feet and have a beer.
IF DOGS RAN FREE - this modern cocktail bar has tasty cocktails in an edgy, minimalist ambiance was (probably better suited to late night than happy hour).
Campari Bar - Get your spritz fix and people watch among designer shops at this outdoor cafe.

EXPERIENCE

The Vienna State Opera House is famously ornate and draws visitors just to tour it. We had splurged a bit for the tickets (about 100 Euro per person) but I read about the potential for standing-room only rickets for 3 Euro. There was no way I was going to stand for 5 hours.
Sigmund Freud Museum - This museum is in the former home and office of Sigmund Freud and it’s really well done. We walked away having learned a lot not only about psychology and Freud’s influence in the field, but also history around WWII and the diaspora of therapists fleeing from the Nazis.
Sights to See: Rathaus (City Hall) and Rathaus Park, St Stephen’s Cathedral (try and check out the catacombs!), the Spanish Riding School, Maria-Theresien-Platz, Volksgarten, these are all places easily walkable from the center of town and worth seeing!

Schwimmende Garten - Cross the river and walk along the Danube to this chill spot for a picnic.
